Rijeka, July 4th 2013 – Following the arrival of the cargo ship from China Shanghai which has delivered 23 million € worth equipment to the container terminal Brajdica last May 20th, 2013 the port of Rijeka was once again drawn on to the map of modern container terminals in the world. Today the first container ship (Maersk Kawasaki) was berthed at the new quay (320 m length and a 14.2 meters depth) which is the next step in returning Rijeka in the shipping scene.
After successfully completing the testing and installation of the newly supplied terminal equipment and construction completion of the new storage area, the essential conditions were met to accept the first container vessel in the new area of AGCT. Berthing of Maersk Kawasaki (318m and 6,500 TEU) and the first movement of containers which were done using ZPMC new Post-Panamax quay cranes opens a new chapter for the container terminal in Brajdica and Rijeka Gateway as a whole.
Jan Ružičić, Ivica Čeprnja, Davor Balen and Mile Vojvodić were the first AGCT employees who have handled the new S2S cranes. The first container from Maersk Kawasaki was discharged 6:30 PM (picture below).
Following Croatian accession to the EU only few days ago, which has created conditions for uninterrupted flow of goods towards the markets of Central and Eastern Europe, this clearly shows the operational readiness of the container terminal for receipt of container vessels without operational restrictions.
During the next week the inauguration ceremony of the go-live of the new container cranes at the new area of the container terminal Brajdica in Rijeka will be held.
